Carl the crab was late for school. “Oh no!” he said. “I must hurry.” He started walking. But crabs walk sideways. Carl walked left. Then right. Then left again. A fish shouted, “School is straight ahead!” Carl said, “I know!” But his legs said, “Sideways!” He walked past the school gate. Then he walked back. Then he walked past it again. The teacher stood at the door. “Carl, come here,” she said. “I am trying!” said Carl. Five minutes later, Carl reached the door. The teacher looked at the clock. “You are late.” Carl said, “No, teacher. I took the scenic route.” “What scenic route?” asked the teacher. Carl pointed left and right. “That one. And that one. And that one again.” The class laughed. The teacher smiled. “Please sit down.” Carl walked sideways to his desk. He missed it and sat in the trash can. “Perfect,” said Carl. “A chair with snacks.”
